There's an undercurrent in crisis response culture that if you can't cut it, there's something wrong with you, and so we don’t ask for help. But your body's response to crises is a normal response to overwhelming stressors. The problem is not your body’s response, but the lack of foundational tools for responding to your nervous system needs. You don’t need to suffer with the weight of the world on your shoulders. After getting my MSW, I became a social worker in Portland, OR.
I wanted to be of service and make an impact on the world.
My first case was on my first day as a child protective services worker. I was dropped into the work and was given no understanding of the toll the work would take on my mind, body, soul, and life.
It was a slow accumulation of traumatic experiences and sleepless nights over 8 years in the field. I didn't realize the impact the job was having on me until I was mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausted. I would listen to people's horrific stories of abuse, hold a wounded child in the hospital, then go home feeling emotionally depleted and lay on my couch eating popcorn for dinner.
I’ve been in the field, I’ve knocked on doors alone, not knowing who was on the other side. I know how it feels to be running on fumes. Drinking coffee to keep going, eating lunch in your car— if you eat at all—making up a profession at social gatherings so you don’t have to talk about work, and canceling plans on the weekend to catch up on sleep.
It took me 2 years to detox the trauma I held in my body before I started to feel like myself again.
On my healing journey, I was trained as a yoga teacher, certified breathwork facilitator, completed a program in nutrition and integrative medicine for mental health, and a certification in psychedelics for psychotherapy.
For the past 5 years, I have been using my healing journey in combination with my knowledge and skillset as a therapist to train others on how to avoid the pitfalls of vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue. I am not just an academic giving you information. I have been in the field myself and I understand the weight of the burden you carry.
